Seattle grabs some defense...

The Tbirds yesterday traded away Robbie Newton to Swift Current for defensemen Scott Ramsay.

Let's talk about Newton first...

Seattle drafted Newton in the 4th round of the 2008 bantam draft but did not break camp with the team this season as a 16 year old. My feeling is that with Jacobs, Doty, Elliot, Alos and Muth already on the roster in the '93 age group and Sanvido still likely to join the team next year as a 17, Farwell probably thought they were pretty solid at the '93 level and could unload Newton to get a '91 defensemen.

This becomes more important with the news that the Tbirds also released Mitch Berg in their moves yesterday which left only Chaffin as a '91 back at the blue line.

Ramsay, 18, fought 13 times last year and already has one bout under his belt this season brings some added muscle and toughness to the Tbirds roster. Last season he added 3 goals and 9 assists with a -10 rating in 61 games.

So the TBirds turn a kid they probably weren't going to use into a defensemen they will have for at least just short of two seasons.... so I like it. If Newton turns out to be a nice player it obviously hurts a little but if he wasn't in their plans it made sense to get something for him.

Seattle also reassigned Jared Crema to a Junior A team they did not announced. I was a little disappointed by this only because we really didn't get much of a chance to see what Crema could do with him being injured for good chunks of the preseason and start of the season.

I like it too, with all the young guys we have...having a guy that I pressume can play @ 6'5 & 215lbs to
help police the joint ain't all bad

I agree with your comment about Crema leaving before he had a chance to really play. Lesson here is not to get hurt as a rookie. Hopefully he'll be back next year. Bad move IMO :(

I hear the guys had their best week of practice this year.

Birds win 2 of 3 between Saturday night and Tuesday. This will be a fun team to get behind and watch
over the next 2-3 years!

Birds 4-2 over spokane.

Tyler - I'm still waiting on pins and needles for your article on the new fighting rules, when's the due date? I like that they picked up someone who appears to have a little mean streak. Or is it not ok for fans to enjoy an 18 year old who drops the gloves? Does that make me unfit for the new WHL? Love your site!

-Dave

well I can add this: Crema is one of their top prospects. It even says so in THIS year's T-Birds guide. SO they let him play one game on the road and sit him out the other 5 games then send him home.

This makes no sense.. he was only injured during the pre-season but was ready to go from Game 1. Why not give him more of a look especially with the shoddy defense we've gotten from the other players??

Is this Sumner's fault or yet another black mark on the resume on one Colin Alexander??

Mike, top prospects doesn't mean that they need to be here this year...Edwards was a top prospect last year, I know Crema personnally...he is a great kid and can play, but they had No Muscle on the blue line with Sena moving up to the wing. They needed this...Crema will be back next year, and a better player for having played some Jr A hockey. Everything in hockey is a stepping stone and a successful team is comprised by many different types of players.

I hope you are right about Crema being back next year. I know it is not often that an 18 yo rookie makes it onto the team out of camp but we will still be young so it could happen.

As far as adding muscle is concerned, we will see how that works out.
