in... ahem... other news...

Kyle Beach was traded to Lethbridge...

this trade actually totally bums me out... not only did Everett get a pretty darn good deal from the Hurricanes but we no longer get to see Brad Haber break Beach's nose. Atta boy Haber....

also in other news... Cody Hanson was assigned to Melville of the SJHL by the Regina Pats. Hanson is only 18... but if he isn't the worst 1st round bantam pick in team history he has to at least be in the discussion. This note also from Drinnan... the master of our WHL news universe, found here.

This bums me out too... Beach could always be counted on to screw up at some point in the game and give the Birds an opportunity. Be it picking a fight at the wrong time (great job Brad) or taking a stupid penalty, he was good for a momentum changing event in just about every game. The Silvertips will probably benefit from the lack of distractions, the improved focus on other players, and from new young talent. A strong Silvertips team is good for the rivalry and good for local hockey, so I can’t complain too much, but like you said it was fun to watch Beach get his a$$ kicked by the Birds. I’ve gotten to know many players and even the guys from the Silvertips I’ve talked to say Beach was a distraction. I suspect they’ll be on their way to becoming a better team by the time we face them again next Friday and Saturday night

re Hanson, yep he didn't turn out to be much of a 1st round pick, but that's not unheard of for this orgainization. For instance Ryan Balt 1st rnd in 97, I don't think he even played in the regular season at all at least not for long. Matthew Hansen in 2000 1st rnd, Cole Simpson 2001, Durand 2002. Simpson and Durand were both high first round picks. In the second round they have had too many players not even make the team, Ashdown 2006, Dion 2003, Pinder 2000. 1st rnders Chaffin and Fleming haven't set the league on fire yet either. Outstanding picks in Marleau and Hickey, Holloway also was a good pick, as was DeCecco. Pickard looks like a steal as a 2nd rnd pick. So its a real mixed bag. I'm looking forward to Sanvido and Jacobs though, hopefully they do well.

I agree that it just wont be the same without Beach there to get his mandatory stupid penalty of the game haha. I also agree that I think even though they are losing a great talent the lack of his antics will in the long run make the Tips a better team this year in my opinion. It will be very interesting to follow how things go in Lethbridge from a far. Oh and Go Birds! Lets get a win against a very good Tri-city team at the Sho.
